International Thematic Meeting in Bratislava

Film club organizers from the Czech republic, Estonia, Poland, Romania and Slovakia met in Bratislava from November 24 to 27. The International Thematic Meeting was focused on our active participation in the democratic life of the European Union, and the theme permeated the whole programme. During workshops, students shared their experience from organizing screenings and other activities, and discussed active civic participation. They practiced how to plan, prepare and realize a student project, and they learned how to use new media to effect positive changes and active participation. The film screenings and discussions with guests were also part of the programme.

Meeting of One World in Schools film club organisers

The most recent meeting of One World in Schools film club organisers took place in Prague October 8–10. During the three-day programme, the students had an opportunity to participate in several workshops focused on their own work in film clubs. For example, they discussed social media, how to use it to make positive changes, and more active civic participation. They also worked on their ability to resolve conflicts and shared their experiences as film club organisers. An important part of the programme was the film screenings and discussions with special guests, visiting students from Burma and Taiwan, and Martin Mareček, director of Auto*Mat. During the Monday programme, the participants experienced the atmosphere of this year’s Forum 2000 Conference, “Democracy and the Rule of Law”, and discussed corruption with politicians. Training for teachers in Sarajevo

One World in Schools has been cooperating with two human rights festivals from the Balkans, the Kosovar Dokufest and Pravo Ljudski from Bosnia and Herzegovina. Over the course of the last year four teacher trainings were organized in order to build capacities for for the use of documentary films in schools and afterschol programs. Last week a two-day workshop in Sarajevo was organized. 15 teachers from all accross BiH have participated. „It was the best methodology workshop, I´ve been to, in a long time“, said Mirela Karadža one of the participants. „I think I will definitely use the films we saw here and especially the social spots, because they are short and I can spend time discussing the topics and use the interactive activites, we tried out here.“ Said Jelena Vučanovič. International School of Documentary Film: One World in Schools 2011

We are proud to announce that the 5th annual International School of Documentary Film (ISDF) took place from June 13 to 19 at a farm in Rakovice. Twenty students and five coordinators from the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Romania and Estonia participated at the event. Under the supervision of director Jana Počtová, editor Tomáš Potočný and cameraperson Jan Rendl, the students were introduced to the art of documentary filmmaking. After this theoretical introduction, they were given the opportunity to shoot their own short films. The result was four interesting mini-documentaries: Taste of Chocolate, The Road, The Empty Alley, and Fourth. Each of these films won accolades from the audience at a public screening at the end of the program.

The ISDF also included screenings of other documentaries, followed by lively discussions with new media specialist Jaroslav Valůch, director Lukáš Přibyl, and historian Adam Hradílek.

One World Film Festival 2011 – turnout of visitors review

During March and April the 13th annual One World film festival was organized in 34 regional citites and towns accross the Czech Republic. The number of visitors reached over 100 000 this year again. Almost 46 000 pupils, students and their teachers came to see the special school screenings. We would like to thank all teachers, pupils and students for visiting the festival and participating in student debates! See you again next year!

Evaluation of the Watch and change project

The three year international project Watch and change, which focused on development issues such as migration, conflicts, poverty and education was implemented in four countries - Czech republic, Poland, Estonia and Slovakia. To find out the impact of the project and whether young people gained more awareness about these global issues the project team had conducted an international external evaluation. THE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON THE USE OF DOCUMENTARY FILMS IN EDUCATION

The conference is organized by the One World in Schools education programme as an accompanying event to the 13th One World festival 2011 of human rights documentary films. The conference is held from 10th to 11th of March 2011 in Goethe Institut, Masarykovo nábřeží 32, Praha 1.

DAY 1: THURSDAY, MARCH 10TH, 10:00 – 17:00
TOPIC: GLOBAL DEVELOPMENT EDUCATION

• Introduction of the conception of global development education (GDE) in the Czech republic
• Presentation of projects of selected non-governmental organizations (NGOs) which are concerned with GDE
• Presentation of student's projects
• Screening of a film about Haiti and following discussion with Mr. Šimon Pánek, the director of the People in Need

• Screening of the film The Lost Soul of a Nation – Loss of Decency and following discussion with the film director Olga Sommerová and the historian Tomáš Bursík

Student screenings at the One World Festival 2011

From March 9 - to March 17, the international film festival of documentary films will take place. At the same time, the One World in Schools prepares to organize its annual student screenings during the festival. This year again, we are hoping to attract thousands of students from all over the country to watch films about poverty, racism, peoplle with handicap or about countries in conflict. The One World for children will consist of three blocks of films - together 15 shorter documentaries. The One World for Students program will consist of 7 longer documentaries, which will be screened to students 13 years and older. You can find more here.

What´s new in the new year

Besides the educational projects implemented on teh national level,  the One World in Schools has entered the new year with an expanded repertoire of international projects. Besides the Watch and change project, which is going to end at the end of this month, the program also leads and cooperates in educational projects in Kosovo, Bosnia and, newly, Georgia. The Kosovo/Bosnia pilot project is funded by the National Endowment of Democracy and focuses on training secondary school teachers and youth workers in using audiovisual methodology in development education. This educational kit will partially be produced by the local partner organzation – DokuFest.
The Georgia project is implemented together with the PIN´s Relief and Development Dept. and local partner organizations. OWIS serves as an educational expert and advisor on methodology. The main themes in this project will be gender, migration and IDPs, undemocratic regimes, peace building and reconcilliation, freedom of speech and inclusion/people with disabilities.
The program also builds on the current partnerships in other projects such as the International Film Clubs project, which will be implemented for the next three years together with Poland, Estonia, Slovakia and Romania. The main goal of this project is expertise sharing and building up youth civic participation capacities.

Recap of the 2010 Program Activities

The One World in Schools program has had a fruitful year. The activities based in the Czech Republic included the production of the following education sets:
- Media and Poverty
- Human Rights
- Milenium Development Goals
- Holocaust – Stories of the Injustice
- Who else?
Production of these materials was accompanied by workshops for teachers where the teachers could try some practical methodology examples of working with documentary film in classrooms. Further the student leaders of Film clubs contined to organize film screenings, film festivals, international evenings and other events focused on their peers and their community throughout the whole Czech Republic.
We also had other very successful events which are worth mentioning:
- student screenings during the One World film festival + Forum 2000
- Student Elections event
- Month of film in schools in Stories of Injustice
- Our Prague – student debate with Prague Mayor candidates
- Our Past - student debate with historians and witnesses about the Communist past of the country
This year the program continued its cooperation with international partner organizations in Slovakia, Poland, Estonia, Lebanon and Romania and added partnerships with organizations in Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sweden, Germany, Bulgaria and Great Britain. The international projects focused on the themes in Stories of Injustice project as well as global development education and youth civic participation topics.
